So I found Mannis on Facebook and messaged him, asking him if he would be willing to speak with me. A few hours later, he agreed to a phone call. This confuses me. He explains the term Dybbuk Box came from the Holocaust survivor, who somehow imbued the wine cabinet with supernatural powers, and that her granddaughter used the term when he bought it from her in We talk about our shared Eastern European heritage, Kabbalah an ancient form of Jewish mysticism , and Jewish folklore like the golem.
We chat for about an hour and a half, all told. I let Mannis go, and we agree to talk again. Just over an hour later he sends me a Facebook message telling me how great it was to talk to me and offers any assistance I need with the story. Haxton, 63, was actually the second owner of the box after Mannis. I found an email address for him, but my message bounced back.
Though both Mannis and Haxton received money from their work on The Possession , Haxton seems to have benefitted the most from the Dybbuk Box, financially and publicity-wise. He would have never gotten the movie done. I got red carpet treatment and everything. I was with the stars, and he was the background noise. And it probably pissed him off. His theory? Mannis himself cursed it using Kabbalah.
And the Dybbuk Box story has done exactly what I intended it to do when I posted it 20 years ago. Though Mannis did buy the wine cabinet at a yard sale, it was from an attorney, not the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor. Make no mistake, I conceived of the Dybbuk Box — the name, the term, the idea — and wrote this creative story around it to post on eBay.
The hair in the Dybbuk Box? And in his brilliant mind came up with an incredible story that he knew would sell. Numerous owners of the box have reported that strange phenomena accompany it. In his story, Mannis claimed he experienced a series of horrific nightmares shared with other people while they were in possession of the box, or when they stayed at his home while he had it.
His mother suffered a stroke on the same day he gave her the box as a birthday present — October Every owner of the box has reported that it smells of cat urine or jasmine flowers and nightmares involving an old hag accompany the box. Jason Haxton, Director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, had been following blogs regarding the box and bought it. His office also experienced the bursting of light bulbs. Upon removal of the box from the museum, Haxton had locked the box in the back of his truck, parking it at his home in the evening.
The final straw, Haxton claims, happened while he and his son were watching television and his son noticed a black flame-like mass in the room with them. Haxton consulted with Rabbis to try to figure out a way to seal the dybbuk in the box again.
I liked it but it needed some special effects. The guy orders a dybbuk box to vidie the results when he opens it. The fear could have been palpable if we were presented with a visual to fear as well as the ideas to fear.

Apparently several ceremonies had taken place to capture the Tokolash and it was captured and sealed in the wooded box he received. A curse was then placed on the box to anyone who dared opened it.
The poster asked for advice on what he thought he should do with it, he did not want to open it, he did not want to pass it to his children and the instructions stated he was not to burn it. Some families often put bricks under their beds to raise it so that nothing can attack while they are asleep.
Recently, I spoke to a African lady I look after and she very much agreed the Tokolosh is feared and she also believed it does terrorise families. She also stated that in some instances the witch doctor themselves by be killed by the villagers after because they had simply dealt with the entity.
The diference is that a spirit trap as hoops and has no central hole. It is believed that is there is a hole even a small one, spirit could get through. The spirit trap is said to draw spirit near and will trap the spirit within until the dawns light comes which then the spirit will burn in the morning light and will send them back to where they belong. So, with so many different cultures using items to capture and spirits over the centuries it is not hard to see why dybbuks boxes may have more meaning then some actually think.
So next time you see a post and someone states the dybbuk box was a made up story by Kevin Mannis in order to gain frame and that nothing is documented about dybbuk boxes prior to this time, then actually they are wrong because there is, some of the entities and items may be named something different but there most definitely similar stories out there so people doing such things way before Kevin Mannis made public the dybbuk box.
I think most are nothing more than creative pieces done by people who attach a story alongside it to make it seem more dark and sinister and a more legitimate selling point,. If you believe you are being tormented by something evil you could try and attempt with help, to summon something to a item. Obviously then, your own intent and your own instructions are with that item and it would be a more legitimate item than buying one off eBay or doing one one personally during a arts and craft afternoon.
You have to have reason, there has to be a genuine concern and you have to have genuine intent and most of all you have to know what your doing! Skip to content Search for:. Dybbuk Boxes from Around the World in History.
